1. Find your perfect look. We've all heard some variation of the saying, "If you don't know where you're going, you'll probably end up somewhere else." This same principle applies to your wedding hairstyle. Often times brides-to-be have a vague idea of a bridal hairstyle, but once sitting in the stylist's chair, it is best to be armed with more than a general idea.

Today, the racks are filled with magazines and books dedicated to finding your perfect bridal style. Take the time to find a hairstyle that you can envision wearing on your special day. This will be especially helpful to your hairstylist- help him or her capture your vision with some reference photos. And feel free to piece these images together- the sweeping bang from one style, the height of the crown from another. Any true professional will appreciate the guidance and ultimately wants you to leave their salon smiling.

2. Grow into it. Once you have your wedding day hairstyle, determine what it will take to get you there. I recommend doing your bridal hair trial at least 3 months before your wedding so that you and your stylist can determine whether your choice style is realistic with your hair length, and if any adjustments need to be made.

Growing out bangs on your way to a great side sweep can be annoying, so get creative with clips and headbands to give your hair some pizazz during that in-between growth phase.

3. Put the shampoo away. Forgo the daily shampoo session at least a day before the wedding. The natural oils add texture to the hair, minimize flyaways, and help the curls to hold better. Advise your bridal party to do the same.

I consider it a big no-no to wash your hair on the morning of the wedding. The extra drying time cuts into your stylist's tight schedule to get everyone beautified on-time. Also, the more damp your hair is, the more elastic it is, increasing the risk of breakage.

4. Pack heavy. Your hair will be loaded with products to keep every follicle in place as you move on the dance floor. So when you're packing for that romantic honeymoon, also pack some ultra-hydrating conditioner to help your hair recoup. Focus the conditionining on the ends, not the scalp, so hair is not weighed down. You'll want your hair blowing in the wind as you celebrate the beginning of your happily ever after.
